The beginning (BattleStick)

Early gameplay of BattleStick

In May 2016, the predecessor to BattleStick 2 was created — a game called “BattleStick”. It was developed and intended to be a two-dimensional game physics experiment by Pinterac — a former French company consisting of a few French programmers and graphical designers.

The game featured a fair selection of items. At first, these items were the Classical Bow weapon and the Classical Stick skin. Later on more weapons and stickman skins were released.

Three of the most iconic features in the game were the temporary game modes: 'Peaceful Mode', 'Gun Mode' and 'No Gravity Mode'. Released on the 31st of March 2019, Peaceful Mode was a mode where players could basically 'hang out' and chat, without the ability to kill each other. The mode received mixed reviews, with some players praising it for being a good way to chat with experienced players, while others criticized it for not holding the 'spirit' of the game - that is fighting - with a 'Global Chat' having been suggested to release in the main menu as an alternative.

The second iconic game mode was 'Gun Mode'. Released on the 14th of June 2019, this was a mode where all players could only have the AK-47 equipped. Gun Mode was intended to be an experiment on how guns-based gameplay would look like in the game. The mode brought extremely fast-paced gameplay, as AK-47 had a whopping 1440DPS (damage per second) - the highest of any weapon.

The third iconic game mode was 'No Gravity Mode'. Released on the 11th of July 2019, this was a mode where the gravity in the map was low, therefore gameplay was slow-paced. The mode has been removed on the 22nd of August 2019 to "increase the presence of players in FFA and TDM modes".

Thanks to this project, the idea of developing a more serious, funnier and reworked game was born - “BattleStick 2”.

The sequel (BattleStick 2)

In late April 2019, there have been internal talks between the staff members about the development of a new stickman game with a similar mechanism to BattleStick. The idea arose when the developer, Yohan Bouché (UnlimitedX), was dissatisfied with BattleStick, highlighting the game's marketing failure in attracting and maintaining a large audience, and noting the mistake in releasing the game too early to the general public on Steam, with many incomplete features, unbalanced weapons, and bugs/glitches; causing the game to receive many negative reviews.

There have been internal talks about what type of a stickman 2D game should be developed. The suggestion was a World War II-based stickman game, which would have featured some Allies and Axis teams: United Kingdom, Nazi Germany, USA, Empire of Japan, Soviet Union and France.

If released the game would have been called “BattleStick: WWII”. However, the whole idea was quickly dropped, as it was concluded that it wouldn't have had a connection with the classical elements of BattleStick, and the developer was opposed to a gun-based game. It was decided to create a direct sequel to BattleStick, called “BattleStick 2”, with improved features and the addition of many new ones.

First Phase (Closed Beta Testing)

In November 2019 an application was announced for players to signup for the Closed Beta Testing of BattleStick 2. The players had to submit their BattleStick in-game nickname and email address. There was no mention of a concrete date for the start of the testing period - just an estimation of "sometime in February/March 2020".

A total of 39 players signed up, out of a limit of 50, however the Administration gave the possibility of players who didn't sign up to contact the Administration and give them all the necessary info to participate. Over time the limit of 50 players was reached.

The development heavily started speeding up in the first quarter of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which gave the developer more time to focus on the game and less on his other projects.

On the 4th of April 2020, it was announced that the Closed Beta Testing would begin on the 24th April, and will last for a straight three days period - 24th, 25th, and the 26th April.

During the CBT there were only a few Armoury items available; Bow, Club, Classical Stick and the Aerial Mine. The only map available was Ice Plains.

Second Phase (Open Beta Testing)

On the 28th of April 2020, it was announced that the Open Beta Testing would begin on 29th May, and will last until 8th June 2020.
